The speaker, Edo state house of assembly ,Rt.Hon.Marcus Onobun has called on women to be more actively involved in politics by vying for every elective positions equally available to their male counterparts.
He made the disclosure in Benin city yesterday when he received members of FIDA (International Federation of Women Lawyer) on a protest visit to the state assembly complex to register their displeasure over the recent outright rejection of the 3 main requests including affirmative action by the national assembly.
Speaking further, he said that it was rather unfortunate that the national assembly had to reject all three requests adding that the government of Godwin Obaseki in Edo state has given more women opportunities to serve at different levels in the state .
He said ” For us in Edo state, women have received more than the mandatory 35% of the affirmative action .
“Women must rally round themselves in seeking for elective and appointive positions in order to attain the objective of the affirmative action as every efforts at achieving the said objective in politics should be addressed in the near future” He added.
Earlier ,members of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) led by the chairperson ,Mrs Violet Olumese protested to the assembly to register their displeasure over the rejection of the 3 requests presented by women to the national assembly.
She lamented the denial of the requests of women to actively participate in elective and appointive positions.
The requests are that it is unjust to decline citizenship to the foreign-born husband of a Nigerian woman ,denying the Nigerian women ability to take indigenship of their husband’s state after several years of being together and denying 35% appointive positions for women.
