Athletes representing Edo state at the ongoing National Youth Games in Ilorin have recorded increased harvest in gold and Silver as they already have in their bag a total of eleven (11) gold,four Silver and four Bronze medals in day five of the Junior sports festival.
Edo claimed gold in Cycling and Rugby on Sunday to maintain second position behind high flying defending champions Delta who have already raked in over
30 Gold medals.
Prosper Alegun(53 KG) picked one gold medal in Taekwondo just as
Olawale Peace Eunice won the Road Race Event in Female Cycling to clinch Gold, while the Female Rugby team whitewashed Anambra 31-0 to win gold to increase team Edo medal hauls.
The prospect of team Edo actualising their dream of surpersing 2019 edition’s achievement is bright as Edo male Volleyball team on Sunday defeated Sokoto 25-19, 22-23, 25-14, and 25-19 to qualify for the Semifinals of the event.
In Athletics which started today, Edo runners won in all their respective hits to qualify for the next round of various events including Para athletics.
Meanwhile, the four gold medals available in Taekwondo were shared between Team Edo who came third overall behind Team Nasarawa with 1 Gold, 1 Silver and Team Oyo with 1 Gold and 1 Bronze.
Meanwhile, the head coach of Team Edo Rugby Jeremiah Igbuwe has restated the state’s commitment to the development of Rugby in Edo and Nigeria in general.
Coach Igbuwe was speaking to Journalists after his team won Rugby Gold Medal for Edo in Ilorin.
He said that Edo is ready to set the pace in Rugby development in the country, as it will continue to encourage school Rugby aimed at talent discovery in the state.
He promised that the state will feature new players in the next edition.
Coach Igbuwe however called on the state government and the Rugby Federation to support the Edo state Rugby Association to strengthen their development programme.
