The Managing Director, National Inland Waterways Authority NIWA, Dr. George Moghalu has appealed to the National Assembly to facilitate a conducive financial and legal environment to make the agency to achieve its potentials by approving the twenty twenty one proposed budget for it.
Dr Moghalu made the appeal during the twenty twenty one budget defense before the senate committee on maritime Transport n Abuja.
He said the over seven billion naira proposed in the twenty twenty one budget is essentially to the completion of all ongoing projects and enhance revenue generation.
Dr George Moghalu said the twenty twenty budget, under performed in both implementation and revenue generation due coronavirus pandemic and pledged to do more in this next years budget if the proposed funds were approved and provided for.
He disclosed to journalists that it was time for Nigeria to develop water transport to lessen hazards associated to land transportation.
Earlier the chairman senate committee on Marine transport, Alhaji Danjuma Goje called for the development of water transport in the country.
Alhaji Goje said the committee had to look into the proposed budget of NIWA to ensure it completes its existing projects.
He expressed worry over the poor performance of the twenty twenty budget due covid-19 which has also affected internally generated revenue for the agency
Meanwhile senator Olujimi Biodun called on the management of National Inland Waterways Authority to look into ways to mitigate water accidents, which according to her were getting rampant.
The budget defense went into an executive session before the committee could adjourn the session.
