Four people died, eight rescued alive and several others trapped in a 3-Storey building that collapsed at Odo Street, Obalende, Lagos Island on Sunday afternoon.
Eye witness accounted that the uncompleted building situated at 62 Odo Street just cracked and came down immediately without any sign.
According to source, “many people people who were new tenants in the under construction building are at home with their families when the incident occurred”.
“I was outside with some of my friends discussing about the Ondo State election when we heard the cracking. Before we can even move from the spot we are to alert people, the whole building came down with a loud vibration”, he said.
He added that youths, some other residents and passers-by quickly went into rescue mission and brought out four dead bodies, eight alive with little or no injuries, while many are still trapped inside.
Reacting to the incident, Nosa Okunbor, Head, Public Affairs-LASEMA said in a statement that “Upon arrival at the incident scene, a 3 storey building under construction was discovered to have self-collapsed”.
“The cause of collapse is yet to be ascertained, but efforts are presently ongoing by LASEMA and other responders towards salvaging the situation”.
As at 17:40hrs, a total of 8 people (all males) have been extricated alive by the LASEMA Response Team and other Stakeholders, and have been attended and quickly transferred to the hospital by LASEMA Paramedics for further medical attention at Lagos Island General hospital.
4 people (3 males and 1 female) have so far been recovered dead and handed over to SEHMU at the incident scene.
