The Nigerian Senate has confirmed the nomination of 40 non career ambassadors and 1 career ambassador from the Federal Capital Territory. Among them is the immediate past editor in chief of the Guardian Newspaper, Mr. Debo Adeshina from Oyo state.
The confirmation of the ambassadors came after a thorough screening by the Senate committee on foreign affairs chaired by Senator Adamu Bulkachuwa.
The Senate President while congratulating the newly appointed Ambassadors charged them to do all within its power to represent the nation well. He also directed the executive to ensure that it provides adequate funding to embassies and high commission so that the newly appointed ambassadors will represent the country well as worthy ambassadors.
Lawan also urged the ambassadors to make sure they interface with their various Senators before embarking on their various place of posting.
The Senate President while responding to some aggrieved lawmakers on issues regarding the nomination of the ambassadors said, it is not within the purview of the Senate to debate on the choice of career ambassadors but the onus lies squarely on the shoulders of the executive.
Meanwhile, the lawmaker representing the FCT, Senator Philip Aduda thanked the Executive for appointing a career ambassador from his constituency but pleaded for more representation.
