A woman accused of killing her 19-year-old son with rat poison has given reasons for her action.
The mother of five, Mrs Elizabeth Iweniyi, now in police custody, committed the crime at Egbeta Community, Ovia North-East local government area of Edo State, Nigeria
The woman and her husband Mr Isaac Iweniyi, 50, were among 56 suspected criminals paraded by the Edo State Commissioner of Police, CP Johnson Babatunde Kokumo in Benin City, recently.
She told newsmen that she has five children and the deceased, known as Marvis was the eldest child, adding that Since he was born he has been sick.
She disclosed that the boy falls unconscious regularly as well as suffering from mental illness.
“I have never known peace since he was born and i have taken him to several places for treatment but the situation seems to be getting worse.
“I am tired, I can’t continue like that again, so I have to give him rat poison to kill him and save us the stress he has brought to the family,” she lamented.
According to her: “That fateful day, I was in the farm when they called me that my son was down again around the neighborhood. When I returned home, I went to look for him and took him back to the house. I immediately went out to buy the rat poison which i gave to him.
” I was fed up with his condition and i had no choice than to kill my son,” the woman narrated to newsmen at the police headquarters amid tears.
